The silent genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo

There has been a silent conflict happening in Congo since 1996, which has resulted in six million deaths. Half of these are children under the age of five.... Women are being raped and 70% of people are in extreme poverty. But you won't hear that in the news...

what is this all about?

The Congo is abundant in natural minerals such as cobalt, zinc, gold, diamond and silver. The same minerals we use everyday without even acknowledging where they come from or how they are obtained.

People, as well as hundreds of children between the ages of 6 to 17 are working in these dangerous mines for less than £2 a day,  12 hours a day. As stated due to the excessive poverty they are having to endure, their parents are left with no choice but to also have their children working in these conditions.

The semi-annual charity we have chosen is Friends of the Congo

They help not only to raise awareness on the conflict, but with their donations, help to contribute to the betterment of people as well as taking care of the land. Congo also has one of the largest rain forests in the world and is crucial for the maintenance of the earth regarding climate change.
